Differently Abled Adults

With our extensive work around disabilities, we have over the last 10 years facilitated a number of events in Scotland bringing international partners together in the UK to explore different ways of developing the rights of disabled adults and children at an international level.

This has ranged from 8 to 60 days where participants were able to explore the different support mechanisms available to disabled adults in Scotland and then look to transfer these ideas back into their own countries.

Romania

STAND International’s work in Romania started in 2007, where through our well-established partnerships we have been working with both older adults with mental health conditions living in residential homes as well as the Roma communities.

For the last 8 years, we worked with our partner to make the conditions of accommodation for those with learning disabilities more acceptable, and at the same time helping residents build on their social and emotional skills,

Belarus

Over the last 5 years, we have financed a supported employment scheme in Belarus for adults with disabilities, allowing them to enter into full time employment with several local companies. This has been a major beak through for realising the rights of disabled individuals involved, as there is still a denial around disability in Belarus and a reluctance to consider alternative models of support for those families who are caring for disabled adults.
